The wild Spanish Mustangs or “Banker Horses” can be traced back to Spanish explorers arrival on the Outer Banks in the 16th century, and they have survived here for over 500 years! They roam freely throughout the northern Outer Banks and, if you are lucky, you might see horses on the beach, amongst the dunes, or along the roadside.
The family will enjoy a visit to The Corolla Wild Horse Fund Center, located at Corolla Light, where you can learn about their history, conservation, and, habitat. The Center was established “To protect, conserve, and responsibly manage the herd of wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs roaming freely on the northernmost Currituck Outer Banks, and to promote the continued preservation of this land as a permanent sanctuary for horses designated as the State Horse and defined as a cultural treasure by the state of North Carolina.”
Perhaps you’d like to experience seeing the wild horses in their wild habitat. Everyone will love taking a tour in a safari-style 4-wheel drive vehicle out onto the pristine northern beaches to discover all these beautiful horses. Guided tours are recommended because there is better possibility of seeing the horses (some tours offer a guarantee). Another option is to rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle and venture out on your own. Either way, seeing the wild horses is a memory that will never fade.
The “Banker Horses” are a beautiful reminder of our national history and seeing them is a perfect way for the family to enjoy the day.
Please remember these horses are wild. If you should encounter them make every effort to maintain the legal distance of at least 50 feet. Trying to approach the horses or feeding the horses, among other things, will lead to a very steep fine.
