7. OBX Festivals

One of the joys of being on the Outer Banks is the tremendous number of ways to enjoy your time here. Throughout the year, the OBX celebrates a variety of festivals and cultural events which provide fun, music, and entertainment. Lots of visitors to the OBX plan their vacations so they can enjoy the beaches and their favorite festival at the same time!


Taste of the Beaches – March 23rd – 26th, 2017   A fun food festival featuring: wine tastings, cooking classes, special menu presentations, brewery tours, tapas crawls, cook-offs, dine-arounds, and many more creative combinations of culinary delights and fun activities. It involves over 50 restaurants! 


Fly into Spring / Easter EGGstravaganza – April 14th – 15th, 2017 –   Join Kitty Hawk Kites over Easter weekend and enjoy the 30- to 100-foot kites flying high over the dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Kids can also take photos with the Easter Bunny and hunt for thousands of hidden Easter eggs (including some silver and golden eggs containing special prizes!) at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing in Nags Head. This event is free to the public.

Annual Nags Head Police Department Easter Egg Hunt – April 15th, 2017 – Join the Nag Head Police Department at 10 am for their annual Police Department Easter Egg Hunt at Nags Head Town Park. Have the kids bring their own Easter basket to fill with candy and prizes. Seperate Easter Egg hunts for 1-5 year olds and 6-10 year olds. Car seat checks and fire engine and police car tours will be taking place. Turn west onto Barnes Street in Nags Head and follow to Town Park on the left. See you there!!

15th Annual Outer Banks Bike Week – April 22nd – 3oth, 2017 – One of North Carolina’s largest motorcycle rallies. This week-long festival includes bike shows, food, music, vendors, and a great way to enjoy spring on the Outer Banks.

The 9th Annual Duck & Wine Festival – April 29th, 2017 – The Currituck-Dare Community Foundation presents a fun and charitable fund raising event at the Waterfront Shops in Duck as 12:00 pm.  This popular event is a competitive chef cook-off from over 20 of the area’s best restaurants including Barefoot Bernie’s, Mike Dianna’s Grillroom. Each restaurant’s dish will be paired with a selected wine. Chef awards are presented at 3:00 pm. Sponsors include Twiddy & Co. Realtors, Brindley Beach Vacations & Sales, Corolla Classic Vacations and many other fine local businesses.


Hatteras Storytelling Festival – May 6, 2017 –  celebrating storytelling, music, and much more!

Kidsfest – May 12, 2017 – This annual event is a free and fun-filled day where children, five and under, can enjoy face painting, bubbles, ice cream and snowballs, art and crafts, music, large vehicles and much more.

15th Annual Coastal Gardening Festival – May 20, 2017 – You do not have to be a gardener to enjoy this outdoor, family-friendly festival! You will discover gorgeous plants for sale, educational fun, free gardening advise, local craft vendors, yummy treats, and children’s activities. Don’t miss it!Proceeds benefit the outreach programs of the sponsors, the Dare Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association with the Dare County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

45th Annual Hang Gliding Spectacular  – May 18-21, 2017 – This amazing event takes place at Jockey’s Ridge State Park is a true example of what hang gliding is all about.  FUN! Originally named the 1st Annual Tactile Meet, the Spectacular has endured over 40 years of continuous years of fun flying, good times and the creation of life long friends.

Mustang Spring Jam 6 – May 21, 2017 – Mike Dianna’s Grill Room presents A Benefit for the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. Live music, dancing, food, and so much more!!! This annual event is always a blast and supports an important part of OBX heritage.


Ocrafolk Festival – June 2nd -4th, 2017 – One of the coolest events on the Outer Banks takes place on Ocracoke Island. The Ocrafolk Festival was ranked as one of the top 15 best island festivals in the world by Coastal Living Magazine!

Annual Rock the Cape – June 17th – 23rd, 2017 – Hatteras Island. Rock The Cape is a celebration of the creative community of Hatteras Island with live music, art demonstrations and activities for children. Rock The Cape will also be hosting the Island Art Show.

35th Annual Rogallo Kite Festival – June 10th – 11th, 2017 – in Nags Head includes two days of kite flying to honor Francis Rogallo, NASA scientist and inventor of the flexible wing. His inventions started the sport of hang gliding and his designs have carried over into the stunt kites, power kites, and hang gliders that are flown today.

16th Annual Under the Oaks Art Festival – June 20th – 21st, 2017 – Corolla features the unique talents of over 100 quality artists with a wide variety of media plus musical entertainment, local food concessions, an art auction, and children’s activities. 

Knotts Island Peach Festival – June 23rd -25th, 2017 – This two day festival features crafts, food, live music, family fun and, of course, Peaches!  There will also be a silent auction, corn hole tournament, and much more. Knotts Island is just a fun ferry ride from the Currituck side!


36th Annual Wright Kite Festival – July 15th – 16th, 2017 – Held in Kill Devil Hills at the Wright Brothers Memorial offers an endless amount of aviation fun!  Learn how to fly stunt and power kites from the experts while watching their displays right beside you.  Families and Individuals are encouraged to bring out their own kites and participate in the event. Free kite making and so much more!


Outer Banks Watermelon Festival – August 3rd, 2017 – Watermelon Festival is a fun-for-all-ages fundraiser benefitting The Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition and features games, music, food, prizes, and, of course, lots of watermelon, generously provided by Food Lion. Enjoy this timeless summer tradition and help keep OBX bicyclists and pedestrians safe! The festival is free to attend. Tickets may be purchased for activities and food. All proceeds benefit the Outer Banks Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Coalition.

New World Festival of the Arts – August 16th, 2017 – Held in Manteo, this is an annual juried show. Under the sponsorship of Dare County Arts Council and the Town of Manteo, the Festival provides local and regional artists an opportunity to display and sell their creative work. This is a family-oriented outdoor show, with over 85 artists from Maine to Florida displaying their works. The Festival provides awareness of the current trends in visual arts while acquainting visitors and locals alike with the town of Manteo.

Outer Banks Pirate Festival  – August 16th – 17th, 2017  Celebrate the great pirate history of the Outer Banks, home of the Mid-Atlantic Graveyard! Learn about the local maritime history, enjoy a little pirate fight, enjoy a pirate movie on our inflatable big screen, and learn about the pirate code!


Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition – September 8th – 10th, 2017 – The Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition is a regional event that showcases world-class stunt kiting skills. Competition categories include: precision, choreography, and dual team and feature some of the top kite fliers in the nation! OBSKC will be sharing the stage with OBX Brewtag in 2016. The kite competition will be held on Saturday and Sunday morning with free kite demos also available on both days.

A Day at the Docks – September 16th – 17th, 2017 – Held on Hatteras Island, this festival celebrates the “spirit of Hatteras” and is “a confirmation of the strength of community, heritage and living traditions of the watermen.” Filled with activities ranging from the mullet toss and crab races to an artist’s village and lots of food and music!

OBX PrideFest – September 22nd – 24th, 2017 – Each year there is a charity recipient for funds raised from ticket sales. All daytime events are family-friendly.  Evening events are NOT! The outdoor events are free and all are welcome!  Come to the beach in September and Bring Your Pride & Joy!!


2017 Bluegrass Island Festival – October 4th -7th, 2017 – Held at Roanoke Island Festival this event brings bluegrass and country headliners to the Outer Banks!  Join us for fun-filled days with the music of our roots, the music of our grandfathers, the music of America… Bluegrass!

10th Annual Duck Jazz Festival – October 7th – 8th, 2017 – The Duck Town Park will be roaring with talent as the sounds of local, regional, and national musicians fill two stages from 11:00 a.m. to dusk (gates open at 10:00 a.m.). This free, premier jazz event in Duck is designed to provide a unique entertainment opportunity and to encourage people to stay in the area and support local businesses. Businesses throughout Duck participate by offering jazz events in conjunction with the festival.

Outer Banks Seafood Festival – October 21st, 2017 – Held in Nags Head, the Seafood Festival celebrates all the wonderful local seafood available on the Outer Banks! Live bands, demonstrations, cold drinks, vendors and all the seafood you can possibly imagine. This festival is so popular that people come from all over the world to attend!

Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival – October 17th – 22nd, 2017 – Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival plays host to hundreds of visitors who travel from near and far to experience the offerings of the Outer Banks and the nearby mainland portions of Eastern North Carolina. The region is a favorite location for both photographers and artists who capture the ‘flavor’ of the area in print and on canvas. This year’s offerings include, but are not limited to the following – guided birding trips, art and photography workshops, tram tours of National Wildlife Refuges, guided kayak and canoe tours, a visit to an ancient maritime forest, And much, much more…

2nd Annual OBX Brewtag – October 28th, 2017 – Flying kegs, a beer garden featuring over 20 local and regional beers, a rock climbing wall and mechanical shark, kids zone, and live music … you can’t ask for much more from a Fall festival! OBX Brewtag is a one-of-akind celebration of flight and beer to benefit The Rogallo Fundation.

Blackbeard’s Pirate Jamboree – October 27th – 29th, 2017  Held on Ocracoke Island this annual event celebrates the maritime history of Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands! This three-day event is a FREE and FAMILY FREINDLY!  Chart your course to Ocracoke Island and enjoy a weekend of swashbuckling fun. Roar as members of Blackbeard’s Pirate Crew invade Ocracoke Island by land and by sea, featuring a three ship battle in Ocracoke Harbor!  Take part in a treasure hunt, enjoy pirate activities throughout the village, send the kids to Scallywag School and indulge in hearty seafarers grub and grog while you shop at the scandalous pirate markets and spend your doubloons on arts, crafts and pirate gear…


Kites with Lights and Hangin’ with Santa  – November 24th – 25th, 2017 – 3:00pm – 6:00pm  – Held at Jockey’s Ridge State Park.  Don’t miss this unique and beautiful Christmas light show on the dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State, featuring a one-of-a-kind assortment of kites decked out in the holiday spirit! Enjoy hot cocoa, cider, and treats at Jockey’s Ridge Crossing during the event.
