15. Oh, Go Fly a Kite!

Rogallo 2015 croppedWe know why the Wright Brothers chose the Outer Banks to try out their flying machine.  This can be one windy place!  Some things go hand in hand, like the beach and kite flying.  So, what better way to spend the day than to go fly a kite?

People come from all over the world to test their skills flying kites on the Outer Banks.  We have kite festivals and skills and stunt competitions and, during the winter holiday season we even have a lighted kite spectacular.

No matter what your skill level, you’ll find everything you need for your family to enjoy some time kite flying.  Local shops have a delightful selection from single and dual line kites to stunt kites and more in all shapes, sizes, and colors. There are even “kite hospitals”, just in case.

Look up in the sky on any given day on the Outer Banks and you’ll find kites floating in the breeze just because they can.  If you were to follow the string to the end you’d also find happy people at the other end, some reminiscing about their childhood kites of sticks and newspaper, and others, eyes wide in amazement, holding the string and watching the flight of their first kite.
