The Outer Banks is world renowned for its spectacular deep sea fishing. The nearness of the Gulf Stream provides the possibility of catching a tremendous variety of species from billfish to mackerel. Whether you bring your own boat or charter, you will find the fishing here amazing.
When you reach the Gulf Stream the water becomes very blue and extraordinarily clear. The teaming sea-life can make the trip exceptionally exciting with the possibility of seeing dolphins, pilot whales, and sea turtles. On occasion you will see a flying fish jump out of the water along side the boat.
Popular departure points for charter fishing include: Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, Wanchese Harbor, Pirates Cove, Manteo, Hatteras Island and Ocracoke. Boats depart year round every day that the weather allows.
If you want to hook into a big game fish like a marlin or tuna, you will need to plan on a full day charter. Be prepared to leave at the crack of dawn and spend the entire day at sea. Bill fish, like marlin and swordfish, are generally tagged and released as everyone on the Outer Banks wants to ensure these beautiful creatures are here for generations to enjoy.
On a half day charter, you will fish inshore for Spanish and king mackerel, bluefish, stripers, and more, all of which can be a lot of fun to catch. All charters provide the tackle you need to enjoy your day out. Check ahead of time with your captain to find out what else you should bring.
Navigating the Oregon Inlet can be tricky so, if you bring your own boat, please check with the Coast Guard for the latest information about navigating the channel. For Gulf Stream fishing be sure to have a 2 way radio and frequency sheet, safety equipment (mirror, whistle/horn, flares, etc.), potable water, and a working navigation GPS. Plan well and be safe.
Get ready to taste the saltwater spray, enjoy the beauty of the open ocean, and join the ranks of those who have matched their skill against the wits of the ocean’s denizens. Charter fishing off the Outer Banks is a thrilling experience!
