When you finish climbing the 214 steps in the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, you will be greeted by a spectacular panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, the Currituck Sound, and the beaches and town of Corolla. Stop and rest on the landings inside the lighthouse, and learn about the history of lighthouses, lenses, and lighthouse keepers.
Finished in 1875, the lighthouse split the distance between the Cape Henry Light in Virginia and the Bodie Island light to the south. The lighthouse was left unpainted so that mariners could identify it by the reddish brick color. In 1939, the light was automated and has flashed every 20 seconds from its 158 ft perch since that time.
Adjacent to the lighthouse you will find the Victorian “stick-built” home which was built for the light keepers and their families, as well as storage buildings and offices. The sunsets over water and beauty of the lighthouse grounds make this an ideal place for weddings or a simple family picnic. http://www.currituckbeachlight.com
